Quartz's story began alongside his sister, Jade, under circumstances neither dog deserved.
The brother-and-sister pair had been left at a boarding facility for more than a month. Their owners repeatedly said they would return for them, but no one ever came. As the weeks passed, the boarding staff continued caring for the dogs while the unpaid bill climbed into the thousands of dollars.
Eventually, after their owners failed to return, Quartz and Jade were surrendered and needed somewhere to go.
Quartz was just over a year old when he came into our care. He was unaltered, and we quickly learned that he and his sister were purebred Belgian Malinois.
Their previous owners had reportedly planned to breed them. Instead, Quartz suddenly found himself without a home and needing an entirely new future.
We took him in, brought his medical care and vaccinations up to date, and began working with him on training while searching for a placement that could meet the needs of a young, high-drive working dog.
It quickly became clear that Quartz wasn't just energetic — he had incredible working potential!
Our friends at Vohne Liche Kennels in Indiana came to meet and evaluate Quartz and Jade.
Quartz was extremely ball-driven and demonstrated the focus, drive, and natural ability that make Belgian Malinois such exceptional working dogs. He was also showing strong potential in bite work and other areas of working-dog training.
They saw the same potential in Quartz that we did, and he was accepted into a program preparing dogs for police work.
The dog who had been left behind at a boarding facility suddenly had an entirely different future ahead of him.
Later, we received the incredible news:
Quartz had been adopted by the Los Angeles Police Department.
From being abandoned with no one coming back for him to becoming a working police dog, Quartz's life had completely transformed.
His story is a reminder that rescue isn't always just about finding a dog a home.
Sometimes it's about finding their purpose.
Quartz was given that opportunity, and today his journey represents everything we hope for when we give an animal a second chance.
