Jade came to Lost & Found Animal Foundation alongside her brother, Quartz, after the two young dogs were left behind at a boarding facility.
They had been there for more than a month. Their owners repeatedly promised the boarding staff they would return, but no one ever came. The staff continued caring for Jade and Quartz while their unpaid boarding bill grew into the thousands of dollars.
Eventually, after their owners failed to return, the dogs were surrendered and needed someone willing to give them another chance.
That's where Jade's new story began.
Jade was just over a year old, unaltered, and a purebred Belgian Malinois.
Her previous owners had reportedly intended to breed her and Quartz. Instead, Jade suddenly found herself without a home.
We took her in, brought her medical care and vaccinations up to date, and began working with her on training while determining what kind of placement would be best for such a young, intelligent, high-drive dog.
It didn't take long for Jade to show us exactly what she was capable of.
Our friends at Vohne Liche Kennels in Indiana came to evaluate Jade and her brother.
Jade was extremely ball-driven and displayed the focus, confidence, and drive associated with strong working dogs. She also showed significant potential in bite work and working-dog training.
Instead of simply looking for a traditional adoptive home, an entirely different opportunity opened up for her.
Jade was accepted into a program preparing dogs for police work.
The young Belgian Malinois who had once been left waiting at a boarding facility was on her way toward an incredible new career.
Then came the news we had hoped for.
Jade was adopted by the Sacramento Police Department.
She had gone from being abandoned and uncertain about what would happen next to becoming a working police dog serving a community.
For us, that's what makes Jade's transformation so special.
Someone could have looked at her situation and simply seen another abandoned dog.
Instead, the people who helped Jade along the way saw her potential.
Her story is an incredible example of what can happen when rescue organizations, trainers, and working-dog professionals come together to find the right future for the animal in front of them.
